About

WAFF is a residency and exchange program developed by Daniel Hüttler and Iris Fabre. Each edition invites 8 other artists to a rural location (away from urban centers). Each invited guest is tasked with preparing a workshop, lecture, choreography, or another form of group activity for one full day of the residency.

Since 2019, this residency has taken place in European rural areas to foster a decentralized art community. We collaborate with local hosts who provide accommodation and offer insights into their social practices and cultural networks.

The core concept of this summer residency is to promote low-threshold, simple artistic exchanges between the art worlds of different countries. It also aims to offer artists from urban environments the chance to engage in creative work outside of their cities, broadening their creative horizons.

Ten artists will come together in an open and creative workshop environment to experiment with forms of collective art. Participants are encouraged to adopt a more inclusive and performative approach to art production by designing one day of the residency for the other artists. WAFF serves as a performative laboratory where invited artists can experience a new environment and develop fresh approaches to their practices.

Waff has been supported by the Ecole nationale supérieure d'arts de Paris Cergy (ENSAPC), the Universität der Angewandte Kunst in Vienna and the Kulturabteilung der Landesregierung in Niederösterreich, Austria.

Locations

The mission of Waff is to create close and tight relationships between the French and Austrian art-scene. We are interested in fostering these bonds and growing into a caring and sustainable network. For that, we ask each previous participant of the WAFF-Residency to can nominate a person to participate in the next residency. The nominees are then selected by the organizers and mentors of the current WAFF edition. Participants are selected based on their compatibility to the residency and its objectives.

How to participate

Over the years, the Waff-residency has been taking place in different places in Europe. Since 2024 it has returned to France, where it first edition took place.
